What is Water Kefir
Water kefir is sugar water fermented with kefir grains. It is full of probiotics that help heal the gut. The grains feed off the sugar, absorbing most of the sugar during the fermenting process. The grains are clear and squishy, but get their name from their look. They are dairy and gluten-free.
Where Do You Get Water Kefir Grains
Water kefir grains can be bought online. They multiply quickly so you only need to buy them once. You will end up with plenty to share. Once you get your grains it may take a couple of weeks for them to acclimate to their new surroundings after the shipping process.
How Do Your Make Water Kefir
Making kefir is super simple. The only ingredients you need are water, organic raw sugar or organic brown sugar, and kefir grains.
Tools Needed
- Quart Mason Jar
- Small Strainer
- Cheesecloth
- Rubber Band
Ingredients
The Process
- Add 1-3 tablespoons of grains to a quart mason jar.
- Heat 1 cup of water and add 1/4 cup of sugar and stir until dissolved. Let cool completely or heat will kill the grains.
- Add the sugar water and 3 more cups of plain water to the quart jar of grains. Stir well.
- Cover with a piece of cheesecloth and a rubber band.
- Leave on the counter at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours.
- Strain the grains from the liquid with a small strainer.
