How to Build Raised Garden Beds

Learn how to build raised garden beds for cheap. With a little bit of time and a few materials you can build these inexpensive raised garden bed.

Today I’m going to show you how to build a raised garden bed. These raised beds are so simple. They take less then a day to put together, filled, and planted. They are so simple we have eleven and a half of them.

You will need three 2x10x8 untreated boards for one garden bed. We went with intreated lumbar because we didn’t want the treatment to be absorbed into our soil and then into our food.

Benefits of Raised Garden Beds

Some benefits of using raised garden beds are the gardens have to be weeded less frequently, you can choose the soil you want in the beds, they are space saving, you can do square foot gardening in them (which is where you grow an abundance of food in a very little pace), and the kids aren’t going to stomp the plants as much when in the garden.

What Can You Plant in a Raised Garden Bed

You can plant just about any fruit, veggie, flower, and herb in a raised garden bed. Some include melons, berries, tomatoes, root veggies, beans, peas, potatoes, greens, herbs, peppers, asparagus, ground cherries, squash, and flowers.

How Deep Should a Raised Garden Bed Be

The plants will need enough space to have a healthy root system, so 6-12 inches deep should be a good guide to follow.

The materials are for one garden bed. If you are planning on making more then one bed, simply multiply the amount of materials by the number of beds you are going to be making.

How to Build a Raised Garden Bed

  1. Cut one of the 2x10x8 boards in half.
  2. Lay the two full length boards parallel to each other on the ground where you plan for your garden beds to be.
  3. Place the short end pieces next to the long pieces creating a 90 degree angle and screw them together. Continue doing this until all four boards are attached.
  4. Position the beds in place and add soil. We chose to fill our beds with top soil and peat moss the first year and have added composted horse manure every year since. Note: Leave enough room between the beds for comfort of walking through and bending down in.
