When growing garlic, you can harvest the green stalks that grow out of the garlic bulbs. These are also called garlic scapes or garlic sprouts. They have a milder flavor than the garlic clove itself. The garlic scapes have a ton of health benefits. They can help fight cancer, protect your heart, prevent strokes, strengthen your immune system, and prevent wrinkles and premature aging. The antioxidant properties in the garlic sprouts are highest when the garlic has sprouted for five days.

How to get started with Growing Garlic Indoors

Method 1: The No Soil Method

Materials You Will Need:

Step 1: Gather Materials and Pick Your Spot

Gather all your materials together and find a sunny windowsill. The garlic will need plenty of light to thrive. Note: Garlic in known for its strong smell but it does not have a smell while it is growing.

Step 2: Add Water to Your Container

Add enough water to the container so that the bottom of the container is covered but keep the water low enough that the water only touches the bottom of the garlic. Note: If the water becomes cloudy and/or smelly, simply change out the water.

Step 3: Add Your Garlic to Your Container

Carefully add your garlic to your container of water, making sure the garlic is standing up in the water and only the bottom is submerged or the garlic will rot. Note: Place two toothpicks into your garlic and balance the toothpicks on the edge of the glass. This will make sure only the bottom of the garlic is in the water.

Step 4: Grow Your Garlic

Your garlic will begin to grow sprouts after a few days. Make sure the garlic is getting enough light and your changing the water daily. This will make sure the water doesn’t become smelly or cloudy.

Step 5: Harvest Your Garlic

Once the garlic scapes or sprouts are about three inches tall you can start harvesting. To continue to grow the garlic sprouts need some stalks to photosynthesize, so only remove a third of the sprouts at a time. Garlic can grow sprouts about ten inches tall.

Step 6: Eat and Enjoy

You can add your scapes to soups, baked potatoes, salads, dips, flat breads, and casseroles.

So this is the same as the first method. You will need to gather your materials and find a nice sunny windowsill.

Step 2: Add Soil to Your Pot
